Why should you try this recipe?
Here's why you'll love this vanilla matcha latte:
- It's easy to make. With only 10 minutes of prep time and a few basic ingredients, you'll be able to make a coffee-shop quality latte from the comfort of your own home.
- Matcha is a health booster. That's because it's rich in antioxidants that help protect us against cell damage and chronic disease. Studies have linked matcha green tea to a host of health benefits such as protecting the liver, boosting brain function, preventing cancer and promoting heart health.
- It's addicting. This latte combines earthy notes from matcha with sweet notes from vanilla. And, surprisingly, they taste unreal together. I mean, there's a reason that Starbucks offers a vanilla matcha drink.

Ingredients
Here's what you'll need to make my matcha vanilla latte:
- Cashew milk: You can make this latte with any dairy or non-dairy milk. I like cashew because it has a creamier consistency.
- Matcha: Not all matcha powder is created equal. Make sure you buy a high quality powder. Here's a guide to help you decide what matcha is right for you. For this recipe, latte grade matcha or ceremonial grade matcha would be best.
- Boiled water: Matcha must be dissolved in water, as it won't dissolve well in milk.
- Vanilla bean: Use a real vanilla bean if you can find it, as it adds a rich, delicious flavor. You can find vanilla bean in the spice aisle at the grocery store. And, if you're wondering how to store it, I wrote a whole post about it here. That said, you can also use vanilla extract if it's all you have available. It's also quicker if you're short on time.
- Coconut oil: The coconut oil and high-speed blending create a froth consistency that's similar to what you find in coffee shop lattes.
- Honey: For extra sweetness, drizzle in honey to taste. If you're not a fan of honey, you can substitute in another natural sweetener. Check out my post on 7 healthy honey substitutes for ideas.

Recipe Variations
- Make it an iced vanilla matcha latte: Sure, this latte is super cozy to drink warm. But, it's also refreshing to drink cooled as the weather warms up. Simply add ice at the end of the recipe and enjoy.
- Add collagen: Adding one scoop of collagen powder will help your latte get extra frothy. Plus, it's good for your skin and hair.
- Use a different milk: You can make this latte with any non-dairy milk. Coconut milk and oat milk are good alternatives if you're looking for that creamy consistency. Otherwise, almond milk is great too. Cow's milk has a strong flavour that doesn't pair well with matcha, so that's the only type you should avoid.
Instructions
Let’s break it down step by step to take any guesswork out of this vanilla matcha tea latte.
- Prepare the vanilla bean by using a knife to slice the bean open lengthwise. Then scrape out the inside with a small spoon.
- Add water, milk and vanilla bean to a small saucepan. Warm on medium high heat and bring to a soft boil. Then remove from heat.
- Add the boiled mixture, matcha powder and coconut oil to a blender.
- Blend on the lowest speed, slowly increasing to medium, for approximately 20 seconds, or until frothy and combined.
- Pour the mixture into your mugs.
- Sweeten to taste with honey (optional).
- Add ice cubes if you want it served cold.
Recipe Notes
- To use a milk frother: This recipe can be made in the milk frother. You can skip step 1 and 2 as the milk frother will warm the liquids for you. Instead, simply add water, cashew milk, matcha powder, vanilla bean and coconut oil to the milk frother and turn it on. You can sweeten to taste after.
- Water temperature matters. The ideal water temperature for matcha is 176 degrees Fahrenheit (just before boiling). Lower water temperatures will results in softer, mellower flavour. Higher temperatures will results in a more bitter flavour. So, if using the stovetop method, remove the saucepan from the heat just before it reaches a rolling boil.
How To Store
- Fridge: Store in an airtight mug in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
- Reheat: Warm in a saucepan over medium heat or in the microwave for 30 - 60 seconds.

Equipment
Here's what you need to make this matcha vanilla latte.
- Small saucepan: to warm the water and spices, as well as the milk.
- Blender: To create a frothy coffee-shop style latte, you'll need a blender. I love my vitamix.
- Milk Frother: Instead of the blender, you can use a milk frother. My favourite is the aeroccino milk frother.
FAQs
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about vanilla matcha latte.
A matcha latte is a less intense version of matcha tea. While matcha tea can be too bitter for some people, a matcha latte uses milk, spices and sweeteners to tone down the strong flavour.
Both options are low in calories. However, coffee contains more caffeine than matcha. While both can help you stay awake and alert, matcha provides a less jittery pick-me-up. This is because matcha has a high concentration of flavonoids and L-theanine.
⠀
Fun fact: L-theanine is often known as nature's xanax. It produces relaxing effects by raising serotonin, GABA, and dopamine levels.

It's safe and healthy to consume matcha every day as long as you're staying under 2 cups (with no more than one teaspoon of matcha powder per cup). Too much of anything is never a good idea.

Easy and delicious. I prefer it sweeter, so I add a bit of honey. But you could do it either way.
