Why should you try this recipe?
Here's why you'll love this ginger turmeric shot:
- They're easy to make. With only 5 minutes of prep time, 6 ingredients and a blender, you'll be set to make these immune boosting, anti-inflammatory wellness shots. They're simple enough to add to your morning routine.
- They're immune boosting: Wellness shots like this one are popular for their ability to deliver a potent amount of nutrients in a quick amount of time. Every ingredient in this shot helps promote a healthy body and immune system. Here's how.
- Turmeric: Has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects. It’s been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries to treat a myriad of health problems.
- Ginger: An anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that aids digestion and minimizes nausea.
- Lemon: It's rich in Vitamin C, which supports our immune system. It's also a natural detoxifier that's alkalizing in your body, protecting you from chronic disease.
- Orange: Also rich in vitamin C, which in addition to immune system support, helps protect your cells and build collagen.
- Black pepper and coconut oil: Help our bodies absorb curcumin, the ingredient in turmeric that delivers most of its benefits.
- They're super tasty: These shots have a mix of sweet, spicy and tart flavours. You can turn any of these up by adjusting the amount of each ingredient (see recipe variations below). But, I like them just the way they are.

Ingredients
Here's what you'll need for this lemon ginger turmeric shot:
- Orange: Oranges add the sweetness that offsets the sour taste from the lemon and bitter taste from the turmeric. I squeeze the orange juice fresh, but you can use a store bought orange juice if you prefer. Just make sure it's low in sugar so you're not doing damage to your health unknowingly.
- Lemon: A squeeze of lemon adds vitamin C, along with a bright and zesty touch.
- Fresh turmeric: I use fresh turmeric root. But, if it's not available, you can make this recipe with powdered turmeric instead. Check out the recipe notes for details on how to do so.
- Fresh ginger: An anti-inflammatory that adds a sweet and spicy kick. Again, use fresh ginger root if you can. But, if you can't find it in your grocery store, check out the recipe notes for instructions on how to use ground ginger instead. Here's everything you need to know about storing fresh and ground ginger.
- Cayenne pepper: Adds a kick.
- Black pepper: Pepper is necessary to aid our body in digesting turmeric. It's been shown to boost the absorption of turmeric by up to 2,000%.
- Coconut oil: This ingredient also plays a role in helping our body absorb curcumin. Because it's not water soluble, it binds to the fat to help with digestion. This will also add froth to the shot.

Recipe Variations
- Make the juice sweeter: Add another orange to turn up the sweetness. Alternatively, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of another natural sweetener, like honey or maple syrup.
- Reduce the tartness: Use one lemon instead of two if you can't handle the sour flavour in this shot. You can also turn up the sweetness using one of the methods above to mask this tart flavour.
- Use coconut water instead of water: Coconut water is often called nature's gatorade because it's filled with electrolytes that help our body work properly, from aiding in muscle contractions to controlling electrical impulses. It also has a touch of sweetness to it.
- Include aloe vera juice: Swap out half the water for this hydrating liquid. It also offers additional gut and skin support.
- Include apple cider vinegar: You could also replace some of the liquid with apple cider vinegar to increase the detoxification effects, but it does have a strong flavour that may burn going down. So add in small increments.
- Turn down the spice: I like my juice with a kick, so I often add a pinch of cayenne pepper. But, you can remove this if you're not a fan of spice.
- Swap the orange for pineapple: Pineapple juice makes another great base for this shot. Plus, pineapple has anti-inflammatory effects that help with joint support.
- Add carrots: Carrots offer a healthy does of Vitamin A, that helps with immune support and eye health. It also has a lovely orange colour that makes these shots look oh so appetizing. Feel free to add into the juice for an extra nutrient boost.
- Use ground instead of fresh spices: This is definitely possible, and I've added the measurements to the recipe card. However, it will have a grittier taste if added directly to the blender. Instead, you'll need to: 1) boil the water needed for the recipe; 2) steep turmeric and ginger powder in it for 5 minutes; 3) strain it to remove the chunks of spices; 4) cool the water; 5) add to blender.
Instructions
This turmeric juice shot is prepared in the blender in a few easy steps.
- Wash and chop the turmeric and ginger root. Peel the skin with a spoon. Once peeled, chop roots into 1 inch pieces.
- Juice the orange and the lemons. I use this lemon squeezer to do so.
- Add all ingredients except black pepper to the blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until mixture is as smooth as it can be. A high speed blender like a Vitamix, Blendtec or Nutribullet work best.
- Pour into a shot glass, grind a dash of black pepper on top and enjoy.
Recipe Notes
- How to use ground turmeric and ginger. If you can find fresh root, use it because the dried versions will give the shot a grittier taste. If you can't find it, no worries. You'll need to follow these steps when using dried ingredients. 1) Boil the water needed for the recipe; 2) Steep the turmeric and ginger powder in the water for 5 minutes; 3) Strain the mixture to remove large chunks of spices; 4) Cool the remaining liquid; 5) Use this liquid in place of the water in the recipe.
- You can use the leftover pulp. I often freeze the leftover pulp from the orange and lemons into individual portions in an ice cube tray. You can use these in future smoothies.
- There's an easier way to peel turmeric and ginger root. 1) Cut off small knobs on the root to achieve a semi-straight piece. 2) Use a spoon to remove the papery skin by scraping it back and forth.
- Be careful of turmeric stains. Turmeric can leave yellow stains on your skin and kitchen tools. If you decide to peel the turmeric, use a washable cutting board and consider wearing gloves. If you do see a stain, act quickly. This baking soda paste worked well for me in the past.
How To Store
- Fridge: This turmeric shot is best enjoyed fresh. But, you can store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to five days.
