Ingredients
Here's what you'll need for keto tartar sauce:
- Mayonnaise: If you use traditional store-bought mayonnaise it's best to go with the olive oil variation as it's better for your health. You can also use paleo, vegan or homemade mayo in this recipe.
- Dill pickles: Adds tanginess to the recipe.
- Capers: Adds more tanginess and a bit of saltiness to the recipe.
- Herbs: Parsley and dill complement seafood perfectly, so are the right selection for tartar sauce. Fresh herbs will provide the most flavour, but dried herbs work well too if that's what you have on hand.
- Lemon Juice: Adds a bright and zesty touch.
- Dijon mustard: Adds a little spice.
- Salt and pepper: The salt helps bring out the flavour in the rest of the ingredients and the pepper adds some additional spice.

Recipe Variations
- Sweeten in up: Traditional tartar sauce includes a bit of added sugar. If you want a sweeter tartar sauce that's closer to the original, add a natural sweetener of your choice to this recipe. I suggest starting with ¼ teaspoon of honey or one drop of liquid stevia.
- Make it vegan: Use a vegan mayonnaise in place of regular mayonnaise. My favourite is Primal Kitchen avocado mayonnaise.
- Make it paleo: Use a paleo mayonnaise in place of regular mayonnaise. Primal Kitchen avocado mayonnaise is a good choice here too.
- Swap mayonnaise for greek yogurt: For a lower fat alternative, you can use greek yogurt in place of any of the above mentioned mayonnaises. This also adds a protein packed punch to the recipe.

How To Store
- Fridge: store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days
- Freezer: Mayonnaise is tough to freeze as it separates when thawed. So, I would avoid freezing this recipe. However, if you're using a non-traditional mayonnaise in the recipe, then you can freeze this tartar sauce for up to 6 months.

Equipment
Here's what you need to make this healthy tartar sauce.
- Food Processor: If you're a fan of making your own condiments, then a food processor is going to be your new best friend. It's as easy as dumping all of your ingredients into the basket and processing for 30 seconds. It will save you a ton of time on prepping and chopping the ingredients that go into your dressings and sauces. For a reasonably priced model that does the job, I'd go with the Ninja BN601.
FAQs
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about low carb tartar sauce.
Homemade tartar sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refigerator for up to 7 days. Mayonnaise doesn't freeze well, so it's not a freezer friendly recipe unless an alternative to mayo is used as the base ingredient.
If you're allergic to mayonnaise or simply prefer not to eat it, there are alternate base ingredients that can be used for tartar sauce. The best substitutes are greek yogurt and sour cream.
The main source of carbs in store-bought tartar sauce come from added sugar. Healthy homemade tartar sauce doesn't use added sugars, which reduces the carb count to 1-2 grams in most cases.
